Wireless CCTV Installation at St Marie’s Cathedral, Sheffield
AB Aerials recently completed a wireless CCTV installation at St Marie’s Cathedral in Sheffield, replacing an ageing internal security system that was no longer providing reliable coverage.
Several of the existing cameras had become misty, while others had stopped working completely. The original system had been installed during an earlier restoration of the cathedral, with cables concealed beneath plasterwork and flooring.
Installing a like-for-like wired replacement would have involved extensive cable runs, additional labour and the possibility of damaging the carefully finished interior. We therefore needed to find a more practical and cost-effective solution.
Finding the right CCTV system for the cathedral
Following an initial survey and a discussion with the cathedral’s clergy, we recommended installing a wireless CCTV system.
A wireless system reduced the need for disruptive new cabling while allowing the cameras to be positioned where they would provide the most useful coverage. This was particularly important within such a distinctive building, where appearance and respect for the existing interior had to be considered alongside security.
The agreed installation included seven cameras covering entrances, exits, the cathedral shop and other important internal areas.

The chosen cameras offered a useful combination of image quality, remote access and intelligent detection features without requiring the extensive cabling associated with a traditional wired system.

- Motion detection with adjustable activity zones
- Adjustable detection sensitivity to reduce unnecessary alerts
- Power management controls to help manage battery life
- Anti-theft detection that activates a loud alarm if a camera is disturbed
- Smart-device notifications containing an alert and thumbnail image
Motion detection and activity zones
The activity zone feature allows selected areas within each camera’s view to be monitored more closely. This helps ensure that movement in important locations generates an alert, while irrelevant movement outside those areas can be ignored.
Detection sensitivity and event types can also be adjusted to suit the location of each camera. This gives the cathedral greater control over when notifications are generated.
Remote viewing and security notifications
Authorised users can view the cameras remotely using a compatible smart device. This makes it possible to check the building, review captured events and receive notifications without needing to be physically present.
When motion is detected, the system can send an alert accompanied by a thumbnail image. This helps the cathedral team assess activity quickly and decide whether further action is needed.
Managing the camera batteries
As with any battery-powered wireless CCTV system, power levels need to be monitored and the cameras recharged when required.
The system provides power management information, including battery levels and the number of events detected. This allows the cameras to be checked regularly and recharged before their batteries run out.
Recharging takes approximately two hours, although the frequency required will depend on the camera settings and the amount of activity detected.

The cathedral wanted a reliable way to monitor the building and capture incidents when necessary. As a city-centre building that welcomes visitors, suitable security coverage provides several important benefits.
