How To Improve Your WiFi Coverage

Improving your WiFi coverage can make a big difference in speed and reliability across your home or office. Here are some effective ways to boost your WiFi coverage:
Relocate Your Router
Place it in a central, elevated location (like a shelf) to maximise coverage. Avoid placing it near thick walls, metal objects, or appliances like microwaves that interfere with signals.
Upgrade Your Router or Antennas
If your router is several years old, upgrading to a newer model with better range and speed (WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E) can help. If your router has external antennas, replacing them with high-gain antennas can extend range.
Use a WiFi Mesh System
Mesh systems (like Google Nest WiFi, Eero, or Orbi) use multiple nodes to provide seamless coverage across large or multi-story homes.
Add WiFi Extenders or Repeaters
Cheaper than mesh systems, these devices rebroadcast your WiFi signal to cover dead zones, though they can reduce speeds.
Switch Frequency Bands
Use 5 GHz for faster speeds in close range and 2.4 GHz for better range through walls. Some routers let you manually prioritize or separate bands.
Reduce Interference
Other wireless devices (baby monitors, cordless phones, Bluetooth speakers) can interfere with WiFi. Keep your router away from these devices. Change your WiFi channel (in router settings) to one with less interference from neighbours’ networks.
Use Powerline Adapters with WiFi Access Points
If wiring your home isn’t an option, powerline adapters send internet signals through electrical wiring and can create new WiFi points in hard-to-reach areas.
Update Firmware
Make sure your router’s firmware is up to date—this can improve performance, security, and stability.
Limit Bandwidth-Hogging Devices
Set up Quality of Service (QoS) settings in your router to prioritise devices or applications that need more bandwidth Do you have specific areas where coverage is poor, or is it a general range issue? And what size is your home or office?
